FAQ
HOW DO I FIND A TOP PLASTIC SURGEON?
If you are interested in having the best cosmetic plastic surgery, the first and most important step is to select a true plastic surgeon who is qualified and experienced in cosmetic surgery. There are many practitioners out there who market themselves as plastic surgeons who are not actually plastic surgeons. The simplest way to make sure that your plastic surgeon is a real plastic surgeon is to make sure that he is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). There are many other similar sounding board certifications out there. Do not be fooled. To confirm certification of your surgeon, click here.
Certification by the ABPS is only the first step. It is also important that your plastic surgeon specializes in and performs cosmetic plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons who perform or are experienced in reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, pediatric surgery or other subspecialties of plastic surgery are not cosmetic plastic surgeons. To find a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the ABPS and performs significant cosmetic surgery, look for membership in The Aesthetic Society. Members are required to have ABPS board certification and perform a minimum amount of cosmetic plastic surgery. To confirm membership of your plastic surgeon in The Aesthetic Society, click here.
Membership in The Aesthetic Society is the minimum requirement but does not guarantee that you have a top plastic surgeon. Look for all of the following for the best plastic surgeons:
- A minimum of 6 years of plastic surgery training after completing medical school
- Training at the most prestigious universities
- Spending most, if not all, of his time on cosmetic plastic surgery (not other types of plastic surgery)
- Having at least 10 years of experience in cosmetic plastic surgery
- Having hospital privileges to perform the procedure(s) you are interested in discussing
Once you have found a surgeon that meets all of the above criteria, meet with him and make sure he answers all of your questions, designs a plan customized to meet your needs and makes you feel comfortable.
